NancyLea Illsley—There are many people who tell us many things as we make our way through our college careers. There are some words spoken that we will remember for the rest of our lives and others that don’t make the cut.
I have been thinking a lot about this lately because I have been given some stellar advice over the past few years at school. I may not always be listening but I listen to what’s important. These people (professors, interviewers, mentors, etc.) have given me valuable life advice. I wish I could remember who everybody is but there are too many to remember.
Okay I am kind of beating around the bush here a little bit and that’s because I am not sure what advice I should use. There were a lot of good ones but I’ll only name a few:
- “When it seems that life is throwing nothing but negativity at you then you push back with positivity and you will get through anything.”
- “Do your work during the day and you will have more time for all the fun activities that happen here at night.” ~Douglas Gulotty
- “To be successful is to fail over and over again. One day you’ll get it right and when that day comes; great things will come with it.”
These are my top three. I feel like these quotes will come in handy at some point in my life.
The one in the middle was the first quote that stuck in my little head. It was Senior year in high school and I had to go to Accepted Students Day at SUNY Delhi. If you don’t know what that is, it’s like an open house except for people who have gotten accepted to that school (you get your picture taken for your ID card). So if you want to go to that school then you have to go to Accepted Students Day. Anyway, I went to meet with my advisor (Douglas Gulotty) about what classes I could take and we made small talk about life and school. We had been talking about homework and that was his advice; “Do your work during the day and you will have more time for all the fun activities that happen here at night.” I listened to that for many assignments throughout college but there were also times I missed out on some fun activities because I waited to do an assignment until the night before.
As for the other two quotes, I don’t quite remember who said them or where exactly I was when I heard them, but they are important to me or will be useful to me considering I remember them. College has taught me so many things from how to be who I really want to be to becoming the best citizen for society that I can be.
One year from now I will enter what some people consider the “real world” and I am going to need all of the help I can get. Phrases such as the three above make me realize that if I listen to the right people and say the right things at the right time, I’ll be perfectly fine.
