Marie Fischer—It’s crazy to think that this time last year, I was being accepted to study abroad at the University of Maynooth in Ireland. I was so ready to get out of Brockport and see all the new things that this world had to offer me. Little did I know when I got back, just how much that experience would impact me four months after I returned.
When I left to study abroad, I didn’t know that I would come out with friends from all over the United States. I didn’t think I’d be able to say that I went to 11 countries around Europe and have a hilarious story to tell you about each and every one of them. When I first came back from study abroad, I was 10 pounds heavier but I was TOTALLY okay with that, I knew I experienced the culture through my stomach as much as I did through my mind & heart.
Coming back to Brockport, I wasn’t prepared to go back to American classes, and I definitely wasn’t ready to come back to a life that didn’t include me traveling to different countries again every weekend. But luckily, I was able to come back to a tiny community that still allowed me to relive that experience every day, and that was in the International Office.
Being a part of this office has allowed me to not only relive my experience, but give the opportunity to others to live out their own experiences abroad. It’s also been beneficial because I’m able to not only work on my public speaking skills by presenting to classes, but also gain valuable office experience by working in the office. At my last job, I was over-worked and under-valued. Here, I’m happy to be only working the hours I do, but if I was asked to work twice as much as I am now, I would be happy doing so.
