10 Things I Missed Most About Campus

Cat Mattis—Now that I have been back on campus for about a month, I have realized how glad I am to be back. There are many reasons I missed living on a college campus over the summer. Here are just a few of the reasons!

  1. Walking to get everywhere.

I am not a huge fan of driving places and I grew up in the suburbs, so I basically drive everywhere when I’m home. Being at a college campus is such a relief because the only things I have to do is go to work and go to class, which are both less than a twenty minute walk from my dorm!

  2. Being able to keep busy.

I am a very active person. I enjoy relaxing over the summer, but I get so bored! I love being involved and meeting new people, so here on campus, that is exactly what I do.

  3. Always being surrounded by friends.

I have plenty of friends from this year where whenever I need someone to go to the dining hall or Wegmans with, I can just text them and walk to their location in less than ten minutes. Also, in a dorm atmosphere, there are people everywhere, and, at least from my experience, they are friendly.

  4. Being so close to food!

My dorm is a three minute walk from Trax and Harrison this year, which is awful for my health, but I love it! Last year, weekends were rough because I had to make the long trek to Harrison, but now my laziness is no longer a problem.

  5. Freedom.

I am sorry mom and dad, but sometimes I don’t like having to tell someone whenever I go somewhere. Not that it is a bad thing, because I love that my parents actually care when I go somewhere. However, it got old real fast over the summer.

  6. Optional classes.

Now, I am not saying that I do not go to class or recommend others to skip class, but sometimes it’s nice to know if I am sick, I can just send an email and go back to bed without any consequences. This is not going to be as easy when I have a real job and work needs to get done.

  7. Gaining knowledge.

Call me a nerd, but I genuinely enjoy learning! Both of my majors are extremely interesting and I love that I am able to learn as much as I do. It may be a lot of work, but it is not that bad, because I appreciate every second of it.

  8. All the free things!

You can get free things just about anywhere in college. From my observation earlier today, walking through the Union you could get a free lanyard, phone wallet, chapstick, candy, and voter registration form!

  9. It’s acceptable to look like a hobo in class.

Nobody cares what you look like on a college campus! Everyone that is in class is too busy focusing on themselves to worry about what someone else is doing. I choose to take all the energy I was going to put into my appearance and use it on schoolwork.

  10. Being pushed out of my comfort zone.

I really enjoy challenging myself and stepping into the unknown. At college I have plenty of times to try something new and it’s okay to make mistakes. For example, my featured photo is a picture of me skating with my boyfriend, a couple of my roommates, and my roommate’s sister. I am not a huge fan of ice skating, mainly because I suck at it. I went in the beginning of the year because my roommates wanted to go, and it wasn’t as bad as I thought it was going to be! I didn’t even have to hold the wall the whole time!
