Doing What I Love

Doing What I Love

Kayla Green—Hey everyone!

It has been so nice to be back on campus for the past month and a half after that long break. Everything fell right back into place and I am already enjoying this semester. I have an extremely busy schedule, much more than last semester, but I couldn’t be happier with it because I love being busy. I am only taking 4 classes, but this is due to the fact that I have my internship and work almost every day as well. Although this sounds like a lot to take on, I am enjoying every second of it because I am finally getting to do what I love!

IMG_6748One part of this semester I am enjoying specifically is my Intro to Digital Video and Audio class. This class is everything I love doing and more. I get to use fancy cameras, unlike the little Handy Cams I have used in the past; I get to use Adobe Premiere Pro to edit; and I am learning so much about the field that I have loved on a recreational level for so long. I finally feel like all the pieces are starting to fall into place for me, and I have never been happier with my choice of major. So far in this class we have done 2 assignments to get to know the cameras, just going around and shooting to work on the many different settings and procedures you need to know to get a good shot. Before the first assignment we chose groups to work in, and I absolutely love my group. There are 5 of us and we are already such good friends from these past few weeks of shooting. (The photo to the right is from us shooting this past weekend, and the photo above is from last night when we were inspired to go out and shoot in the fog.) Our first real project was a silent film, in which we had to write a 3-5 minute script and go out and shoot. My group wrote a murder mystery and we went above and beyond to make our project excellent, even shooting some scenes in the Alumni House and off campus at a hardware store. We get to start editing very soon and I can’t wait to see the different versions of the film each of my group members puts together. I look so forward to this class, even though it’s at 8 a.m., and I can’t wait to see what else is in store for us the rest of the semester.

Another great part of this semester for me is my internship through the Office of College Communications. I have gotten the opportunity to edit some videos for the college’s YouTube channel, as well as the creative freedom to go out and shoot my own video (link attached at the bottom — check it out!). I was taught Premiere Pro from the first day at my internship, which was before we learned it in class, and I also learned how to use various different cameras and equipment. Even though it is unconventional for freshmen to do an internship, and I was skeptical at first, I am so glad I did. I can perfect my skills there in addition to the time I have in classes, which should really help me in the future. I would highly recommend anyone to take any opportunity like this that comes your way — you won’t regret it! I am really looking forward to continuing more projects there and immersing myself in this field.

Lastly, my job gives me more time to do what I love! As a reminder, I am working at Community Development, and I am part of the Promotions Team. On a day to day basis, I come in and work on posters or videos for events put on by the office, and different employees come to me with requests to advertise their events. I get to work on Photoshop, Illustrator, and Publisher each time I am in, and basically just get to be creative. I couldn’t ask for a more fitting job for me, and I am so lucky to have found it. Enjoying going to work every day is not something that every college student may feel, but I am proud to say I do.

Well, that is pretty much what is going on with me as far as my daily life goes! I am so excited to finally be in my major and becoming more of an expert in these different areas. My semester is busy, but I wouldn’t have it any other way. Until next time 🙂
