In my introductory post, “Hello there! Which way to the dining hall?”, I mentioned that Hartwell Hall baffles me. The first week of classes I kept getting turned around and confused. I could only shake my head and wonder, “how can I get so messed up in a straightforward building?” But finally one day last week it hit me: I can’t see out the windows. The shades are always drawn and that means that I can’t orientate myself. Such a simple thing had been keeping me from feeling like I knew which way was which.
But just because I discovered the source of my confusion, doesn’t mean I wasn’t confused any more. It felt like a step in the right direction, however. And then, just yesterday, I made another discovery. On the second floor there is an arch in the hallway that is just about above the main foyer on the first floor. There is also a bathroom in roughly the same place on both these floors. Eureka!
Go ahead and roll your eyes. I won’t be offended. I know it’s beyond silly, but mastering the art of getting around Hartwell has been my mini Mt. Everest! That’s a bit of an exaggeration of course, but I do feel more confident.
Now the only mystery remains is this: why does the school’s website say it’s haunted???
